Indigenous Community Engagement is a Dodgeball programme for Indigenous Communities in Western Canada. It was critical that the organization consider not only the typical needs of sport development, like curriculum, equipment, training an coaching, but that the organization invests in understanding cultural context and traditional delivery methods for any learnings and teachings. In engaging Indigenous communities, cultural and historical context is required to ensure that any outreach will be received positively and that the sport will be embraced and sustained.
Target group(s)The goal is to create a sustainable, enduring community in the sport that becomes part of the greater national community. Particularly in the pilot, WDBF is working with Dodgeball Canada (DC) and the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta (ISCA) to deliver programmeming to women in Indigenous communities that will not only increase the participation of women in the sport, but will enhance community capacity to develop and deliver the sport through the provision of training and certification in coaching, officiating and governance.
