The University of Limerick’s recent completion of a Theory of Action and Literature Review marks a significant stride in advancing evidence-based approaches for enhancing the capacity of international sport organizations and their personnel. Through meticulous examination, the literature review delves into the pivotal factors influencing the implementation of interventions within sport organizations, uncovering crucial insights into effective strategies. In tandem, the Theory of Action, crafted through collaborative endeavours, lays the groundwork for the Sport for All training initiative, leveraging logic models as indispensable tools for conceptualization and execution.
A comprehensive literature review (pictured below) has explored the factors influencing the implementation of interventions within sport organizations. The review highlights several key messages, emphasizing the importance of qualified personnel, adequate resources, policy integration, and the design of evidence-based interventions for successful implementation. Additionally, effective communication, collaboration across various settings, and the customization of interventions to suit the needs of target groups and stakeholders emerge as critical actions for achieving implementation success.
In order to provide an evidence base for the Sport for All training, the Theory of change was undertaken over the course of three meetings with project partners and the INTERACT+ Advisory board. The Theory of change began with the creation of a logic model. A logic model is a visual representation or a structured framework that outlines the components and relationships of a program, project, or initiative. It serves as a valuable tool for implementing a theory of action. Having a logic model provides many advantages to programme implementers, such as providing a clear and concise representation of the programme’s components which aids in communication between stakeholders and funders, helping to ensure alignment between the programme’s activities and its intended outcomes, and providing key performance indicators that facilitate data collection and programme evaluation. The logic model also aids in resource planning and allocation and should allow for ongoing monitoring and assessment. The logic model for the Theory of Action is shown below.
The INTERACT+ project aims to increase participation and education in Sport for All and health enhancing physical activity, develop new delivery systems in Sport for All capacity building, and support sports organisations in changing their policies. In order to make these changes in the most sustainable and efficient ways, the INTERACT+ project began with establishing a strong evidence base for the project. When organisations place Sport for All and physical activity development and promotion at the core of their activities, they will in return increase participation in their sports and disciplines, help gain new members, as well as improve their visibility, reputation, and recognition. The capacity building is designed to train, qualify, and empower International Sport Organisations, their Continental and National Federations, and local sport clubs to become Sport for All leaders worldwide.
The INTERACT+ project is currently in its second year of implementation and is scheduled to continue until December 2025.
